The Northwest Ordinance was the government rule which allowed states to buy lands they had claimed to the west. These lands range from the Appalachian Mountains, British Canada, and the Great Lakes to the north of Ohio. This was officially known as the first organized territory of the US after the colonization of the Europeans.
