the total cost of a pair of shoes is $85.86. What was the cost of the shoes before the 8% sales tax was added?

First you have to find out how much the sales tax is.

85.86(.08)=6.86

You have to subtract that number by 85.86

85.86-6.86=79

So the cost before tax on the shoes was 79$
