Answer:

to amplify the DNA (make millions / billions of copies) so that when we run it through a gel electrophoresis, the DNA shows up. The second way it can be used is to help actually find the sequence of the DNA. ANd so if DNA is left at the crime scene the DNA left can be made into multiple copies for further testing.
