What is the purpose of transitional words or phrases in an essay?

The truth is that it makes an essay easier to read. If you write an essay without any transitional phrase or word it would sound like when a car runs over a whole on the ground. In general, it just makes it look more formal and in some manner makes it easier and more interesting to read.
