Aircraft equipped with powerful radar units are forbidden from turning their engines on near people who are on the ground because it has adverse side effects on people's health. Though the effects are not acute, they are chronic in nature.

Long-term adverse effects include cancer, reproductive malfunction, development of cataracts, and changes in the developmental behavior of children.
